These lines describe person who is in a sense judged, eyes here represent the consciousness, the general social construction of the modern man and its inability to do any movement. The other iconic section in the poem are the lines “And I have known the eyes already, known them all-/The eyes that fix you in a formulated phrase,/And when I am formulated, sprawling on a pin,/When I am pinned and wriggling on the wall,/Then how /should I begin”. This complicated relationship is typical feature of the modern individual. One for the public show, and the other one for its inner casual use. In line 27-28 “To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet” the people are diminished and simplified to body parts, they talk about the duality of the human psyche of the modern man. There are many references and sections in which body parts are used expressing certain aspects of the modern life. This unclear situation is present everywhere and in every corner and there is no escape in this dream like environment.Īn interesting depiction of imagery also is by using body parts. “The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes/The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the/ window-panes Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening”. Lines below depict clearly an urban setting in which the imagery also has an important position. As it is the case with the modern world there are a lot of psychological issues that are related in the maze of modern relationships and many times there is confusion ambiguity and life does not have a clear path. The city landscape is not a good place, instead its urban infrastructure is a place of decline and decadence and this is the urban imagery of the 20th century.įog and smoke represent in the poem represent Prufrock’s troubled ad confused inner world. In lines 8-10 "tedious argument" there is a simile a comparison of the streets compared to the tedious argument. In a sense Prufrock is trying to invite a woman into his world but the roads are misleading, representing the insecurities of the modern life or modern relationship. In line 4-6 “Let us go, through certain half deserted streets/ the muttering retreats/ Of restless nights of one night cheap hotels”. The poem leads us into the maze of lower-middle class neighborhood. The menacing streets of this unknown city are intertwined and complicated. The poem gradually emerges from a city landscape. First, the menacing streets of a city, the fog and smoke, body parts. In this essay few aspect of imagery used will be discussed and analyzed. Imagery used in the poem plays an important role. In a post-war age and especially in an age before the WWII, the overall situation in Europe and many other parts of the world was hopeless and sad and that hopelessness is represented in artistic way here. In our case Prufrock is full of imagery and it sets the tone in the poem. As an essential element in every art including literature, it enables the reader to connect, but also to enter the world which is represented in the poetry. Imagery plays an important role in this poem.
